Brick and natural stone give buildings and gardens a great deal of their character, but masonry sits fully exposed to the weather and slowly loses its colour beneath a layer of organic growth. Hopkins Exterior Cleaning provides professional brick and stone wall cleaning in Thirsk and across North Yorkshire, lifting away the algae, lichen and weathering that dull masonry and bringing the natural colour of the brick or stone back to the surface.
Where brick and stone walls go wrong
We clean all kinds of masonry, from the elevations of houses to garden walls and boundary walls. Wherever brick and stone are used, they pick up the same kinds of staining over the years. The decline is slow and even, so it often goes unnoticed until a sheltered porch or a recently rebuilt section shows just how far the rest of the wall has weathered.
The problems we are most often asked to deal with on brick and stone walls are:
- green algae spreading across shaded, damp and north-facing elevations
- lichen forming crusty patches and spots on stone and mortar
- moss building up on copings, ledges and the tops of garden walls
- black weathering and sooty staining dulling the face of the masonry
- run marks and dark staining below sills, gutters and copings
- a tired, neglected look on walls that are structurally perfectly sound
In most cases the wall itself is in good order. It is the surface coating of growth and weathering that has changed how the masonry looks, and that is exactly what brick and stone wall cleaning is designed to remove.
A careful method for older masonry
North Yorkshire has a great deal of older and period property, and a lot of beautiful, characterful stonework to go with it. Soft, aged stone and the lime mortar that holds older buildings together are part of what makes that masonry so appealing, and also what makes it vulnerable.
This is where our method-led approach matters. Hopkins Exterior Cleaning matches the cleaning method to the surface, and aged brick and stone almost always call for a careful, gentle approach rather than brute force.
Why high pressure is the wrong tool for stone
Aggressive high-pressure washing can do real and lasting harm to masonry. It erodes the soft face of weathered stone, scours older brick and washes out the lime mortar between the joints. Once the surface of historic stone has been blasted away or the pointing has been stripped out, that damage cannot be undone, and a wall can be left looking and performing worse than the staining ever made it.
For brick and natural stone we therefore rely on a soft-wash approach. Rather than blasting the wall, we apply a specialist cleaning solution at low pressure and let the treatment do the work of killing and lifting the algae, lichen and moss. This cleans the masonry thoroughly while leaving the stone, brick and mortar intact. You can read more about this gentle, treatment-led method on our soft washing page.
A further advantage of the soft-wash method is that it treats the growth at the root. Algae and lichen do not just sit on masonry; they root into it. A plain wash removes what you can see but leaves the growth alive to return quickly, whereas a proper biocide treatment kills it down, so the wall stays clean for far longer.
Bringing the colour back
Once the growth and weathering are lifted, the natural colour of the masonry comes back to the surface. Red and buff brick recovers its warmth, and natural stone returns to its true tone rather than the flat, green-grey it had slipped into. For garden and boundary walls this can transform the look of an outdoor space, and for house elevations it makes a sound, well-built property look properly cared for again.
Walls rarely sit on their own. The stone detailing around a building (the sills, lintels and copings) often weathers in step with the wall itself, so brick and stone wall cleaning frequently goes hand in hand with our stone sill and lintel cleaning. On rendered or part-rendered properties, render cleaning is often carried out at the same time so the whole elevation comes back to an even finish together.
Domestic and commercial wall cleaning
We clean brick and stone walls for homeowners and commercial clients across the region, from the elevations of houses, cottages and bungalows to garden walls, boundary walls and the masonry of commercial buildings and managed properties. Whatever the wall, the principle holds: an honest assessment of the masonry first, a gentle method matched to its age and condition, and a finish that restores the surface without damaging it.
