Patios in Northallerton tell two stories. Behind the High Street and the older streets of town you see Yorkshire stone flag patios that have been down for generations, gone dark with lichen and weed growth between the slabs. Out on the Hambleton estates around Romanby and Brompton, the patios are mostly modern Indian sandstone laid in the last fifteen years, with neat jointing and brushed finishes that have started to green and stain. Hopkins Exterior Cleaning cleans patios across the DL6 and DL7 postcodes for both ends of that range, with pressure washing for the harder modern surfaces, soft washing for porous stone and the right re-sanding or finishing where it is needed.
What dirties Northallerton patios
Patios in Northallerton pick up four kinds of dirt, and most domestic patios show all four to some degree by the time the owner picks up the phone. The first is green algae, which spreads across any patio that does not get full sun for a few hours a day, particularly on the north-facing rear gardens of the older terraced streets behind the High Street and on the shaded side yards of Romanby semis. The second is black spot lichen, the small dark circular spots that grow into the surface of older sandstone and Yorkshire flag and are particularly hard to lift without the right method. The third is moss, which grows in the joints between slabs and block paving and lifts the surface jointing as it spreads. And the fourth is weed growth, mostly through failed jointing where the original sand or mortar has weathered out. The combination explains why patios that were laid clean and tight ten years ago can look beyond saving by the time we are called out, and why a single proper clean transforms them.
Patio surfaces we work on across DL6 and DL7
Northallerton has the typical North Yorkshire patio mix. Older Yorkshire stone flag patios on properties around the historic core. Modern Indian sandstone on the newer Hambleton estates around Romanby, Brompton and the family housing out by the Friarage Hospital. Block paving in the front and rear of the inter-war and post-war housing across town. Concrete and concrete-paving on commercial yards and some older drives. And the occasional decking and slate-style surface. Each one needs a slightly different cleaning approach. Yorkshire stone is generally a soft wash job because the surface is porous and high-pressure damages it. Indian sandstone and block paving handle a rotary surface cleaner at moderate pressure. Concrete tolerates a higher pressure cleaner. We carry the kit for each rather than trying to make one method work on all of them.
How we clean patio
The first step on any visit is to walk the patio with you and look at the surface, the joint condition and any areas that need particular attention. For block paving and Indian sandstone we use a rotary surface cleaner at moderate pressure, which lifts algae, lichen and engrained grime evenly across the surface without the streaking that a wand-only approach gives you. For Yorkshire stone and older porous sandstone we will often use a low-pressure soft wash to lift the worst of the algae before any pressure work, to protect the surface. Heavy weed growth in the joints is treated and pulled before cleaning. After the main clean we rinse the surface, sweep the loose material, and assess whether the joints need re-filling.
Re-sanding and finishing
A clean patio looks good for a day. A clean patio with properly re-sanded joints holds the look. For block paving we re-fill the joints with kiln-dried sand, sweep it into the joints with the dust extracted, and brush off the surface to leave a finished result. For Indian sandstone with sand and cement pointing that has weathered out we can replace the jointing with a polymeric jointing compound or refer the work to a paver if it needs full repointing rather than a top-up. We do not seal patios as a default; sealing is a separate decision that depends on the surface, the use and the owner’s preference, and we will talk it through with you rather than upsell it on the day. Where sealing makes sense we can quote it as an add-on.
Common Northallerton patio questions
My patio is covered in black spots that other washes never lifted. Can you?
Probably yes. Black spot lichen needs the right combination of chemistry and method. Pressure alone rarely shifts established lichen on porous stone, but a controlled chemical treatment followed by a rotary clean lifts most of it. We will say honestly if the lichen is so deeply established that a clean will only lift the surface; sometimes the realistic answer is that the surface will look much better but the deepest spots will still show.
Will the pressure damage the joints in my block paving?
Not the joints themselves, no. The sand in the joints will come out during the clean, which is expected and the reason we re-sand at the end. Properly bedded block paving handles the cleaning approach without issue. Where the bedding has failed we will see it on the day and tell you what is going on.
Do you cover Romanby, Brompton and the rural lanes?
Yes. The DL6 and DL7 area we work in includes Northallerton itself, Romanby, Brompton, Ainderby Steeple, Leeming Bar and the rural lanes between. The travel time for the rural jobs is built into the quote rather than added on top.
Are patio cleaning quotes in Northallerton free?
Yes. Quotes are free and no-obligation. A description of the patio, the rough square metres and a couple of photographs is usually enough for us to give a sensible price by phone for most jobs.
