The signs of blocked gutters are easier to read than most people think, and almost all of them show up from the ground. You do not need a ladder, and you should not be climbing one to check. A blocked gutter gives itself away long before it does any real harm, as long as you know what you are looking at.
We cover Thirsk and the villages around it, and this is the job we get called out to most once the leaves start dropping. By then the gutter has been struggling for a while. The homeowner just did not spot the early blocked gutter symptoms while there was still time to sort it cheaply.
Here is what to look for, and roughly what each sign is telling you about how urgent it is.
The signs of blocked gutters that show up in the rain
The clearest one is water. In a decent shower, a healthy gutter carries everything to the downpipe and away. A blocked one cannot, so the water backs up and sheets over the front edge like a little waterfall. If you see that curtain of water halfway along the run instead of at the downpipe, the channel behind it is full.
The quieter version shows on a dry day. Look at the wall directly under the gutter line. Dark vertical streaks, green tide marks, or a patch of render that never quite dries out all point to water that has been spilling over the back or the joints for months. In Sowerby and Topcliffe we see this most on north-facing walls, where nothing gets a chance to dry.
Plant growth in the gutter means the blockage has settled in
If something is growing up there, the problem is not new. Tufts of grass, a run of moss, even a small sapling sprouting from the gutter line all mean the channel has held silt and rotted leaf mulch long enough to turn into soil. That does not happen in a season.
Growth like that will not clear itself, and it holds water against the metal and the joints every time it rains. It is worth dealing with before winter, because once the frosts arrive that trapped water expands and starts working at the seams.
A sagging gutter line is weight you can see
Wet debris is heavy. A gutter packed with it can hold surprising amounts of water, and the brackets were never meant for that load. Sight along the run from the garden. If it dips in the middle, or if any section has pulled away from the fascia board, the weight has already started to win.
This is the sign worth acting on quickly, because it is the one that turns into fascia damage. A gutter that pulls away lets water run straight down the boards behind it, and timber that stays wet through a North Yorkshire winter starts to soften and rot. Replacing fascia and soffit costs many times what a clean would have.
Catch it from the ground and you keep it cheap
None of this needs a ladder to notice. A slow walk round the house in the rain, then another on a dry day, will tell you almost everything. If you can see overflow, wall staining, greenery in the channel or a dip in the line, the gutter is asking for attention.
