Why a slippery patio is worse in October than November

October is when a patio turns slippery, not because of frost but because summer algae finally gets the autumn damp it was waiting for.

A clean brick patio in Thirsk after soft washing, the kind of slippery patio surface treated before autumn

A slippery patio catches more people out in October than at any other point in the year, which feels backwards. The leaves haven’t fully dropped, the hard frosts haven’t arrived, and the garden still looks like late summer. Yet October is when the back step goes from grippy to greasy almost overnight, and it is when most of the slip calls we get around Thirsk come in.

The reason is biology, not weather. The green film on the slabs is algae, and by October it has had a full summer to settle in.

Why a slippery patio peaks before the leaves fall

Algae needs three things: moisture, shade and time. Through June, July and August the spores work into the surface of the stone and into the joints, feeding on the thin layer of dirt and organic matter that builds up on any patio. You don’t see much, because the summer sun keeps the top layer dry and pale.

Come the back end of September the nights draw in, the dew sits longer each morning, and the algae that spent all summer getting comfortable finally has the damp it wants. A patio that looked fine in August can turn green and greasy in a fortnight. That is the slippery patio problem in one line: the growth was already there, and the autumn damp just switched it on.

By late November things often feel a touch safer underfoot. The leaves have come down and formed a rough, drier mat over the slabs, and that mat gives more grip than wet algae does. It is not a fix, the algae is still living underneath, but it explains why people notice the danger most in that October window.

Where algae on patio slabs grabs first

It is always the same spots. The north-facing side of the house, the strip under a tree, the run along a fence where the sun never quite reaches. Algae on patio slabs starts in the shade and creeps outward from there.

Steps are the real worry. A flat patio you can pick your way across, but a slippery step with a bag of shopping in one hand is how people end up at A&E. We see it most with older customers in Sowerby and around Thirsk who use the back door as the main way in, so patio safety is not an abstract thing for them.

If you want to test your own, put a foot on the shaded slabs after a wet night and you will feel it straight away. A sound patio should not feel like a boat deck.

What actually fixes a slippery patio

Two honest options, and they are not equal.

A scrub with a stiff brush and some off-the-shelf patio cleaner will knock the worst off and buy you a few weeks. Fine as a stopgap before visitors arrive. It does not kill the algae at the root, so it comes back quickly.

The proper answer is a soft washing treatment. Soft washing uses a low-pressure chemical clean that kills the algae at the spore level instead of just blasting the green off the top. Done before October, it keeps a patio grippy right through the worst months, and it lasts far longer than a jet wash because there is nothing left alive to regrow. Our patio cleaning service page covers how that works across stone, block and slab.

A word on jet washing: in the wrong hands it strips the surface off soft stone and actually makes a patio hold algae faster the year after. On the right surface, in the right hands, pressure washing has its place, but it is not the default answer for a slippery patio.

Booking before the slippery season

The useful takeaway is that autumn patio cleaning is best done early, ideally in September before the algae wakes up, rather than in the middle of an October cold snap when every patio in town has gone green at once.

A standard patio is a half-day job, and we will tell you if it doesn’t need doing yet. If you want eyes on it, we cover Thirsk and the surrounding area for free quotes, and the contact form is the quickest way to get on the list before the autumn rush.
